What’s included?

The Goodnight Goon Book Companion:

  • Pre-Reading Activities:
    • My Bedroom Drawing (page 4). Print sheet and ask child to draw a picture of his or her room. Encourage him or her to describe it, too. Ask questions like, “What do you like the best about your room?” “What color are your walls?” 
    • Vocabulary Puzzles (pages 5 & 6) Print, laminate, and carefully cut out puzzles. Have your child try to read, or you read the words and definitions, and then have him or her correctly put the puzzles together. 
    • Draw and Connect (pages 8 to 11). After introducing your child to the vocabulary using the vocabulary puzzles, have fun by having your child try to depict the meaning of the word by drawing a picture. 
  • While Reading or Pre/Post Reading:
    • Search & Find. Find the objects in the little werewolf’s room. Many of my clients were mesmerized by all the visually appealing (aka creepy) items in the room. 
  • Post Reading:
    • The Little Werewolf’s Bedroom Drawing (page 14) Print sheet and ask child to draw a picture of the little werewolf’s bedroom. 
    • Wh-Questions with Visuals (page 15): Ask the questions and have the child circle the correct answers.
    • Use the Venn Diagrams (pages 17 to 19) to compare the bedrooms and the books Goodnight Goon vs Goodnight Moon. A diagram with blank lines is also included so you can compare/contrast other items (e.g. a witch vs. a goon or a mummy vs. vampire).
    • Listen & Follow the Directions (pages 21 & 22) Ask your child(ren) to listen carefully while you read each direction. He or she can only begin AFTER you have finished reading the direction. One-step and two-step directions are provided. 
    • Open-Ended Articulation Practice – Pot Full of Goo
    • Have your child say his or her target sound and then use a bingo marker to color each dot.

The Goodnight Moon Book Companion: 

  • Parent Handouts (pages 4 – 7)
    • Lists of single words and early word combinations to target during reading, repeated readings, and doing the included activities in this packet! Share these informative handouts with parents so they can learn how to encourage single words and early word combinations while reading Goodnight Moon and performing the activities in this book.
    • In COLOR and BLACK AND WHITE – your preference!
  • Thematic Vocabulary Cards (pages 8 to 11)
    • Colorful picture cards of some of the vocabulary words included in the book. Hide these cards in a sensory bin or somewhere in your house and have your child try to find them. Scavenger hunts are so much FUN! You can also work on improving your child’s ability to listen and follow directions by asking your child to listen to your directions. For instance, “The mouse is on the table” The moon is under the couch” Or “The kitten is in the basket.
  • Puzzle Cards (pages 12 to 15)
    • Large puzzle cards that you and your child can put together while saying the words. Print pages 12 to 15 on card stock and laminate for extra durability. Help your child put these puzzles together while naming the pictured objects or animals. Use self-talk and parallel-talk while putting the puzzles together.   • Play dough Activity Cards (pages 17 to 20)
    • *Play dough is NOT included in this activity
    • Print and laminate each sheet. Then, cut out each card. Shuffle the cards and place in a pile with the pictures facing down. Have the child turn over a card. Encourage the child say to “Good night, _________(and the name of the item) while tucking it in with a pretend blanket made from play dough.
  • Say, Color, and Display Coloring Sheets (pages 22 -35)
    • These coloring sheets contain pictures of the target words for your child, student, or client to color. They are unique because there is a visual cue for the first sound of the pictured word. For instance, the lips are together for the picture of the mouse. This cues children to say the word by putting their lips together. Such visuals can help your toddler see how to make the first sound in the word. Coloring these pictures is a wonderful way to intentionally target the vocabulary in the book.
